In this session, my client exhibited notable progress in vertical alignment. Reduced thigh flexion supported effective pelvic repositioning, which contributed to improved upper body lift and posterior shift. Furthermore, the shoulders retracted appropriately, and the head positioned directly above the shoulder girdle, resulting in a significantly enhanced vertical alignment within the field of gravity.

The after image reveals a noticeable reduction in anterior tilt and shows that we are successfully encouraging the spine to return to a more neutral position in the lumbar area. Enhanced core engagement is contributing effectively to these positive changes.

My client’s fascia tends to be on the tighter side compared to the broad variance seen in the connective tissue spectrum. We are continuing to address a pain issue which is what brought him to try Rolfing. The integration process continues with a comprehensive approach.

Starting at his feet as they move medially his legs become more supportive and that change moves up his body giving length and lift in his torso allowing his shoulder girdle to move back and the repositioning of his arms allows them to rest more to his sides than in front of him. His head moves to the centerline of his body and rests on top of his shoulder girdle more comfortably and he is taller.

As demonstrated by my client shown in the accompanying graph, there has been a significant increase in length in her structure. We focused on creating space in the hip region to facilitate these positive changes. Gravity is your ally and acts as great supportive force in this example and it is working for you or against you-so make it your friend.

Gentle Rolfing for Pregnancy

During pregnancy, the body produces the hormone relaxin, which increases ligament and tendon laxity, leading to decreased joint stability and a higher risk of overstretching or injury. As pregnancy advances and structural changes intensify, Rolfing can support the body in adapting to new patterns, promoting increased comfort and functional movement. Sessions are conducted in a side-lying position with appropriate pillow support.

Improving Forward Head Posture

This before-and-after image from a Rolfing® session demonstrates a notable improvement in my client’s head alignment atop his shoulder girdle. According to established guidelines, every inch of forward head posture increases spinal pressure by approximately ten pounds, potentially causing the cervical spine to support double the weight of the head or more. My client’s lateral line is visibly improved with less flexion in his thighs as his head returns to a more optimal position. Forward head posture may reduce lung capacity by restricting elevation of the first rib during inhalation, and it can contribute to premature degeneration of intervertebral joints. Rolfing® empowers clients to become aware of their postural habits outside of sessions, providing them with strategies to support lasting integration.

In this example, when my client's left leg rotates laterally, it allows her entire left side of her body to lengthen. This subtle change results in greater evenness in both her hips and her shoulder girdles. These gentle shifts, although seemingly minor, can lead to significant changes in overall body alignment. By fostering these nuanced adjustments, our goal is to help clients connect with their bodies in a meaningful way. This connection empowers them to experience improved fluidity and efficiency of movement, while also reducing areas of pain and restriction.

This adjustment facilitated the gastrocnemius muscle compartments to shift appropriately toward the posterior aspect of both lower legs, promoting optimal positioning of the hips in a more horizontal presentation—a key element in the Rolfing process. Additionally, the client's torso elongated, contributing to increased height, and his head rotated centrally over his body.

Our next focus will be above the pelvis. Although not clearly visible in the photo, there's a subtle rotational adjustment in her pelvis that results in a more balanced appearance in that region. When working with clients, our goal is to establish a lateral alignment within the gravitational field, which leads to more efficient movement, improved fluidity, a wider range of motion, and importantly, the relief from persistent pain in areas such as the back, neck, shoulders, hips, and feet that brings many people to Rolfing.

There is pronation in both her left and right foot and after the session she moves toward a more parallel orientation with more support as her legs are better positioned under her pelvis. Her weight-bearing shifts from left to right, while relaxation of the anterior shoulder girdles facilitate greater lateral movement of the arms away from a forward position. My client's head became more centered over her shoulders, contributing positively to the overall integration process. Through Rolfing we get people to move with more ease with better alignment and feel better in their body through the process.

As her right leg has become increasingly comfortable with weight bearing, she has reported greater ease in walking and an enhanced willingness to explore movement strategies that promote optimal gait mechanics. The increased ability to bear weight on her right leg is also positively influencing the alignment and structure above her pelvis, resulting in improved lift throughout the anterior and posterior aspects of her body as well as a more balanced lateral line. This progress toward structural balance is being addressed through the Rolfing process, working within the constraints of her previous injury.

Helping you Realign with Gravity

In this week’s blog I worked with another client to realign her body toward the Rolfing line. Her thighs showed less flexion, her shoulders were less rounded, and her head sat more naturally above her shoulder girdle. By encouraging her body to organize around a central vertical axis, we made noticeable strides in this session. Our aim is to help each person discover their own inherent balance centered on the concept of "the line." This holistic approach promotes better posture, increased balance, and smoother movement. As Dr. Rolf famously stated, “gravity is the therapist.”

There was decreased thigh flexion, a more natural anterior pelvic tilt, reduced rounding of the shoulder girdle, and diminished forward head posture, resulting in an overall substantial shift reflecting elements of the “line” approach. For many octogenarians, the primary motivation might be to maintain balance and reduce the risk of unexpected falls, which can often initiate a series of complications leading to decreased mobility and diminished quality of life. In this session my client shifts dramatically toward a better-balanced structure. Movement is from left to right, with a more horizontal pelvis, which is one of the hallmarks in the Rolfing process, and there is more equal weight distribution through both legs, Rolfing can help clients regain confidence in their movement patterns and foster a greater sense of independence. If you have relatives in this age group, consider referring them to Rolfing Iowa to support their stability.

Her head was better positioned above her shoulder girdles, with reduced shoulder rounding and enhanced lift in the pelvic girdle. This bodywork modality is a process-oriented re-education of the body through movement and touch, and it systematically releases patterns of stress and impaired function. Individuals of varying backgrounds and ages seek Rolfing Structural Integration not only for pain and stress relief, but also to optimize their performance and enhance mobility in everyday activities.

Basis of Support

Early in the Rolfing process we are working with the lower legs and feet. Significant changes can occur within a single session, but sustained alignment will require ongoing effort due to long-established posture. The objective is to achieve a more parallel foot orientation and reposition the gastrocnemius muscles toward the back of the lower leg where they belong. Both feet exhibit pronation, with the left showing greater pronation, which necessitates additional attention in future sessions. Here my client’s shift in the feet, and the lower legs provide a more lengthened torso far away from the focus of the session showing how working the lower body has a powerful effect on the upper body.

Reach out to get on the schedule and begin experiencing the benefits of Rolfing for improved alignment and overall well-being. Whether you’re new to Rolfing or continuing your series, we look forward to helping you get physically centered through the integration process. Returning to a stable and grounded state by focusing on the body’s connection to gravity which involves finding a balanced position and developing awareness of the subtle movement patterns within your body. Pictured you can see my client is positionally biased with too much weight going down her right side and after there is much better weight distribution into the ground with greater overall balance. Clients often report feeling more grounded, lighter, and aware of their bodies after sessions, which facilitates greater ease of motion.

During this appointment improvements included a more horizontal positioning of his pelvis, and a better balance in his back with movement left to right up his body with a longer posterior neck. My client maintains a disciplined fitness routine and is in excellent shape. Most of us have structures that would benefit from Rolfing where the shifts would be easier to see and can be significant. Most people are not familiar with style of bodywork and be sure to forward this e mail to a friend you think might benefit.

You can see the strain pattern clearly in the right lower leg and right medial knee. We have made good progress in realigning her right leg, working into the adductor compartment allowing the right leg to shift and in the new position provide much better balance in her structure. In the Rolfing process we are very interested in getting more equal weight distribution down each leg.

Moving Toward the Vertical Part 5

My client is progressing toward a more vertical posture, an ongoing process that occurs both in the background and foreground throughout the series of Rolfing sessions. With less flexion in the thighs, there is increased lift in the upper body as the shoulders move back, and the head aligns over the shoulders. Improved movement patterns and reduced discomfort in problem areas are welcomed outcomes for clients undergoing this bodywork process.

Moving Toward the Vertical Part 4

In this session, my client is progressing toward a more vertical alignment, with reduced flexion facilitating improved positioning of the head atop the shoulder girdles. Our aim is to enable gravity to function as a supportive force for the body's structure, recognizing its pervasive influence. A significant aspect of the Rolfing experience involves developing awareness of subtle postural changes, learning to identify misalignments, and actively adjusting one's structure to achieve a more optimal and supportive position.

Here my client’s movement is toward better vertical alignment. The goal is to get the most verticality that one can support without undue effort or strain. Less flexion and less locked leg presentation after the session creating more length in her torso and less rounding in her shoulder girdles with a more natural anterior tilt in the pelvis and she is taller. While not all clients experience such immediate changes post-session, those who do not will nevertheless notice a positive somatic response, which will contribute to enhanced movement and greater overall comfort in their bodies.

Utilizing gravity as a supportive mechanism enhances structural integrity. In the Rolfing framework, the concept of the “line” represents an ideal that promotes increased length within the body, supporting both expansion and refinement toward the pursuit of structural balance—outcomes that are evident both visually and experientially.
